We’re called Stage 1 Motors, so you’d expect us to have a soft spot for a tastefully fettled S3. This one is a blue saloon that’s had the upgrades an enthusiast would actually choose. It’s still the 2.0 TFSI with S Tronic and quattro, which means 310PS and 380Nm from the factory, 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. Now it breathes through a Ramair intake and turbo elbow and exhales through a Miltek cat-back. The result is a deeper, richer note that will make your neighbours look up from their hedges, but won’t get you a letter from the council.
H&R springs drop it onto the road without turning your spine into a xylophone. The RS honeycomb grille, Maxton rear diffuser with corner splitters and RS3 steering wheel finish it off. It looks like it means business, and with quattro grip and a quick-shifting S Tronic box, it delivers on that in any weather.
Inside, it’s a lovely place to be whatever the journey, whether that’s the school run, the daily commute or a blast on a Sunday. Full grey leather, a panoramic roof to let the light in, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system that will make you take the long way home. Whether you want the hits or the exhaust note, you can have both.
It’s Euro 6 and ULEZ compliant, so it’ll happily commute into London without a charge. Smart enough for the professional who needs to look the part on Monday morning, lively enough for the weekend hooligan in you come Friday night, and ideal if you’re a bit of both and don’t see why you should have to choose.
